About
A Vara is a Spanish unit of measurement which equals 33 ⅓ inches. Early surveyors used the Vara when describing the metes and bounds of the land conveyed in the Sovereign land grants from Spain, Mexico, and the Republic of Texas. The measurement was recorded using a “Cordel”, a rope made from the waxed fiber of the Pita plant 50 Varas in length. However, the distances measured were not always precise, as the Cordel’s length would expand or contract with the heat of the day. The General Land Office of Texas continues to require surveys of public land to “observe the Spanish measurement by Varas.”
